empowering pathways
Shannon Gee Inspires the Next Generation of Scientists at Notre Dame’s Science Careers Panel.
We are thrilled to celebrate our very own Shannon Gee, who recently had the opportunity to represent Archaeology on the Science Careers Panel at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Fremantle!
Shannon was invited to share her experiences and insights with first-year students, offering invaluable advice about shaping a career in the sciences. As an archaeologist and heritage consultant with a passion for Aboriginal archaeology, Shannon spoke about the essential role of hands-on industry experience—through internships and volunteering—in building a successful career.
Here’s what Shannon had to say about her experience:

“On Tuesday, 18th February 2025, I had the opportunity to represent Archaeology at the University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle) as part of a science careers panel for first-year students. The aim was to share our journeys and highlight the various options available to them through the university and beyond.
Each panellist spoke about the choices we made during our university years that shaped our careers, offering advice on what students could focus on to move forward in their fields.
I shared my own experience at Notre Dame, emphasizing the value of gaining industry experience through internships and volunteering. While learning the core theory and practical skills at university is essential, these hands-on opportunities were key in shaping my career in Aboriginal archaeology and heritage consultancy. I also took the chance to share some of my favourite aspects of the work I do.
At the end of the session, the students were encouraged to ask questions, which led to some great discussions.”
It was great to be a part of, and really interesting to hear about other professionals’ (including some university peers of mine) journeys into their fields.” – Shannon Gee, Archaeologist | Heritage Consultant ”

Shannon’s passion for her work and dedication to inspiring the next generation of scientists were evident throughout the panel. By sharing her journey and emphasizing the importance of gaining industry experience early on, Shannon is helping students realise the many pathways to a fulfilling career in archaeology and heritage consultancy.
Thank you, Shannon, for your continued commitment to fostering future talent and for being such an inspiring role model for young professionals in the field!
