Welcome to the ALS Team, Alex Priest!
Alex brings five years of archaeological experience across excavation, survey, and monitoring. He graduated from Macquarie University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology, having begun his professional fieldwork through a 2020 field school at the Iron Age Iberian site Castello de Cuncos in Portugal. Since then, his work has spanned both historical and Indigenous archaeology across New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, and Western Australia, with a strong focus on cultural heritage.
Alex has worked extensively throughout the Kimberley and is now based in Western Australia’s South West, where he has joined ALS as a Heritage Consultant. He has a particular interest in survey-based archaeology and is currently working towards further specialisation in lithic analysis.
Alongside his professional work, Alex continues to pursue independent research into Polynesian–European history in the Oceanic region between 1800 and 1850, specifically focusing on Raiatea and Tahiti, and examining cultural heritage and complex trading relationships.
“Alex’s passion for archaeology and his strong on-ground experience make him a great fit for our team. He brings a considered and respectful approach to heritage work that reflects the way ALS works with communities and Country.”
— Bill Bennell, Principal Director
Through this combined academic and field experience, Alex has developed a strong working knowledge of Indigenous, post-contact, and maritime archaeology. He approaches heritage management from both archaeological and cultural perspectives, with a strong appreciation for the relationships between people, history, and place.
When not on surveys or excavations, Alex enjoys hiking, wild camping, fishing, and swimming. A genuine nature lover, his connection to the outdoors complements his heritage work, supporting a strong understanding of environmental features and how they interact with cultural landscapes.
Welcome to the ALS team Al!
